Food

Grow, preserve and store your own food

Food self-reliance is a compounding skill: every season of soil you build, every jar you preserve, every seed you save makes next year easier. You don't need to produce 100% of your calories to be meaningfully more independent — a productive garden, a stocked pantry and solid preservation skills cover most of what matters.

What you need to know

The concepts that underpin everything else in this skill.

  • Calories matter more than variety — plan staple crops, not just salad greens.
  • Soil health is the whole game: organic matter, structure, biology.
  • Your growing zone, frost dates and what actually grows in your climate.
  • Preservation methods: drying, canning, fermenting, freezing, root cellaring.
  • Shelf life and rotation (first-in, first-out) for stored food.
  • Seed saving basics and why open-pollinated/heirloom varieties matter.

What you need to learn

A staged progression — master each level before moving on.

Beginner

  • 01 Grow five easy, high-yield crops successfully (potatoes, beans, squash, greens, tomatoes).
  • 02 Start and maintain a compost pile.
  • 03 Learn one preservation method thoroughly (start with water-bath canning or drying).
  • 04 Build a 3-month pantry and rotate it.

Intermediate

  • 01 Plan a year-round garden with succession planting.
  • 02 Preserve with pressure canning, fermentation and dehydration.
  • 03 Run a root cellar or cool storage for staples.
  • 04 Save seed from your best plants.

Advanced

  • 01 Raise livestock for eggs, meat or milk (chickens are the gateway).
  • 02 Design a permaculture system — perennials, guilds, water in the landscape.
  • 03 Grow grains/staples and process them.
  • 04 Build food security through a multi-year storage plan.

Your next steps

A practical, ordered path from where you are now.

  1. 1 Map your growing zone and last frost date.
  2. 2 Start with one 1.2m × 2.4m bed and five proven crops.
  3. 3 Run the food storage calculator to set a realistic pantry target.
  4. 4 Learn one preservation method and use it on this season's surplus.
  5. 5 Begin saving seed from your strongest plants.
