How we label tasks

Every piece of equipment and every task on this site carries one of the three labels above. The label reflects the lowest level at which it's safe to attempt, assuming you read carefully and use the right tools. It is not a guarantee — you are responsible for your own competence.

What we always defer to professionals

• Any mains-voltage (AC) electrical work, grid interconnection, or battery banks above 48 V nominal.
• Structural work — foundations, load-bearing walls, engineered spans.
• Gas work — installation and servicing of LPG/propane systems.
• Permitted plumbing and septic/wastewater systems, and any cross-connection to a shared or mains supply.
• Flue and solid-fuel appliance installation where local code requires certification.

Codes, permits & regulations

Rules vary enormously by country, region and even council. This site points you to the right questions, but your local authority is the only authoritative source. Before starting any significant project, check: building consent, electrical compliance, water rights, wastewater/septic rules, fire restrictions and insurance implications.

• Calculators publish their formulas and assumptions so you can verify the math.
• We distinguish clearly between general education (understand how systems work), DIY (safe to do yourself) and professional work.
