Off-Grid Water: How Much You Need and How to Make It Safe

Real daily water figures for drinking through to homesteading, plus a practical guide to filtration, purification and safe storage.

Water is the resource you cannot substitute, and the one people underestimate most. This guide covers the two questions that matter: how much do you actually need? and how do you make it safe to drink?

How much water do you need?

The World Health Organization's absolute minimum for drinking, cooking and basic hygiene is around 15–20 litres per person per day. That is survival, not living. Realistic off-grid figures:

Then add garden (≈5 L/m²/day in the growing season) and livestock (0.5 L per chicken up to 60+ L per head of cattle). The water demand estimator itemises all of this for your household. Measure your real use with a tank gauge — it's the only number that counts when sizing storage.

Making water safe: the treatment ladder

"Clear" is not "clean". Treat water according to what's actually in it — and the only way to know is to test. A basic annual test (bacteria, nitrates, pH, and heavy metals if your source warrants) is cheap insurance.

  1. Sediment / screening — remove particles that would otherwise shelter pathogens and clog filters.
  2. Carbon filtration — improves taste and removes many chemicals and heavy metals.
  3. Disinfection — the step that actually kills pathogens:
    • UV sterilisation — effective against bacteria, viruses and protozoa; needs clear water and power.
    • Chlorination — cheap and reliable; dose and contact time matter.
    • Boiling — the fail-safe: a rolling boil for 1 minute (3 minutes above ~2,000 m altitude) makes water safe.
  4. Micro/certified filters — for protozoa and bacteria (e.g. Giardia, Cryptosporidium), which are chlorine-resistant; look for ratings that specify what they remove.

Know your source's risks

  • Roof catchment: bird droppings → Salmonella, Campylobacter; dust and airborne pollutants. First-flush diversion + disinfection.
  • Bores / wells: usually good bacterially but watch nitrates (from fertiliser/septic) and heavy metals. Test annually.
  • Springs & surface water: assume Giardia and Cryptosporidium are present; filter and disinfect.
  • Tankered / delivered water: only as safe as the carrier's hygiene — treat to a consistent standard.

Safe storage

  • Use food-grade, opaque tanks — light + air = algae and insects.
  • Keep tanks sealed, with screened inlets/overflows to keep out mosquitoes and vermin.
  • Rotate emergency water stores (every 6–12 months) and keep them in a cool, dark place.
  • Maintain the whole chain — clean gutters, check diverters, inspect tank sediment.

Safety

Waterborne illness can be severe or fatal, especially for children, the elderly and the immunocompromised. If you can't test, treat. Never cross-connect an untreated supply to a mains or potable line without a licensed plumber and backflow prevention.
